Human smuggler arrested

GUJRANWALA, Dec 7: A human smuggler, who got crossed the Iranian border to 10 youths after receiving Rs3.5 million from them, was arrested by an FIA raiding team here on Wednesday. While a local court granted his two-day physical remand.

Reports said that accused Muhammad Yahya and his accomplice were wanted to FIA’s passport cell for sending youths to Greece through Iran and Turkey.

An investigating officer informed the court that Abdul Haq, Arshad and Faiz Rasul, accomplices of the accused, were still fugitive. The judge ordered to produce the accused before court again on Thursday (today).

Robbery incidence: Citizens have expressed concern over a rise in car thefts, dacoities and robberies in and around the city and demanded the highups to take steps for their protection.

At a meeting here on Wednesday, the participants said six cars had been taken away from different parts of the city during the last few days.

They said the car of a journalist, Abdullah Khalid, was taken away from a bank branch on the GT Road while that of a businessman, Abid Sohail, from the district courts. A jeweller, Nadeem, was shot dead by two robbers after looting cash and gold worth Rs3.4 million in Guru Nanikpura some two days ago.

They alleged the police were not taking interest in arresting the accused or recovering the looted goods.

They demanded that all accused involved in dacoities, robberies and other heinous crimes should be arrested at the earliest.

RECORD: The official record and assets of former city and Sadar tehsil councils have not be distributed among four towns despite a lapse of two months, and the citizens are facing inconvenience to get important documents and certificates from these institutions.

At a meeting held at the DCO’s office here on Wednesday, the participants said the record and assets should be divided and handed over to the four towns.

Aroop, Nandipur, Khaili Shahpur and Qila Dedar Singh towns were formed under the city district government following abolishing city and Sadar tehsil councils some two months ago. Now when the nazims and councillors of these towns have started functioning, they are facing problems for non-availability of the record.

BOOKED: A Wasa deputy director and other officials, including sewer contractor, were booked on Wednesday for the death of a passerby after falling into a manhole.

Wasa contractor Awais had the manhole dug on the road and left it uncovered in front of the Model Town police station which had taken the life of Muhammad Azeem on July 13 last year.

Lawyer Sheikh Eizad Masood has got registered an FIR against Wasa officials through a judicial process.
