Inzamam keen on county stint

LAHORE, Dec 5: Inzamamul Haq, Man-of-the-Series in Pakistan’s 2-0 Test series win over England, is keen to play in English county cricket. “I would like to play once in county cricket, something I have not done as yet. Last year there was an offer from a county but I was not in a position to accept it,” he said on Monday.

The 35-year old Pakistan captain has been in prolific form this year, completing 1,000 runs in his last eight matches at an average of 83.33.

In the second Test against England in Faisalabad, Inzamam scored hundreds in each innings to break former captain Javed Miandad’s record of 23 Test centuries for Pakistan. He has scored four centuries since March and also made 97 in Lahore against England.

“I have always said that I don’t plan ahead, I go step by step and series by series. But playing in the World Cup is an ambition and so is playing for some county,” he added.

Pakistan are due to tour England next year, playing four Tests and five One-day Internationals, but the players have a rest period in May.

Pakistan’s Younis Khan, Mushtaq Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, Rana Navedul Hasan, Azhar Mahmood and Danish Kaneria all played county cricket in 2005.

Many leading Pakistan players including Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Zaheer Abbas, Mushtaq and Sadiq Mohammad, Intikhab Alam and Asif Iqbal enjoyed long stints playing in England.—Reuters
