Waqas excels as KH bag U-19 cup

Published December 6, 2005

KARACHI, Dec 5: A brilliant all-round performance by skipper Waqas Haroon enabled Karachi Harbour claim the National Inter-region Under-19 one-day trophy with a six-wicket defeat of hosts Faisalabad at Iqbal Stadium on Monday.

Waqas took three for 17 in five overs of leg-spin bowling as Faisalabad made 202 in 42.4 overs after losing the toss.

The captain then hit up a fine unbeaten 65 to help Karachi Harbour reach the target with eight balls to spare as the visitors made 205 for four.

For Faisalabad, Mohammad Khan Bhatti was chief run-getter with an 88-ball 56 that included one six and one four.

Hasan Javed and Sarfraz Ahmed also played crucial roles in Harbour’s success. He made 47 off 59 deliveries with five boundaries. The third-wicket partnership between Hasan and Waqas realized 70 runs.

Wicket-keeper Sarfraz, who is a talented batsman, provided the finishing touches to the final with a breezy 31 off 33 balls in the unfinished fifth-wicket stand of 71 with Waqas.

It was second triumph for the Karachiites within a week since Karachi Harbour’s senior outfit, led by Moin Khan, won the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy Silver League title, trouncing Hyderabad by an innings and 205 runs inside three days.
