Police thrash Wapda

ISLAMABAD, Dec 5: All teams playing on Monday including defending champions Police scored straight set victories over their respective rivals in the 41st National volleyball championship at the Liaquat Gymnasium. Police defeated Wapda 25-22, 25-15, 25-18 to go through to the quarterfinals league where their opponents on Tuesday will be NWFP.

Naseer Ahmed, Ehsan Tipu, Tariq Waseem and Muhammad Zaman were instrumental in Police victory that helped them top Group B ahead of Wapda.

The fast-improving POF side downed NWFP 25-20, 25-16, 25-14 through the good work done by Mohib Rasul, Ehsan Iqbal, Saddi Ahmed and Yasir Rehman.

By virtue of this win, POF finished first in Group D followed by NWFP. In the quarterfinals they will face Wapda.

In another match, the visiting Indian Punjab team scored their second victory in a row with a 25-13, 25-19, 25-13 defeat of AJK.

The Indians were greatly helped by Jagbir Singh, Gurbinder Singh, Roy Joseph and Gurwinder Singh and they set up a meeting in the last eight league with Punjab.

Army walloped Railways 25-20, 25-8, 25-12 and will play PAF in the quarterfinals. Muhammad Elahi, Zaheer Abbas and Naeem Jan starred in victory.

Pak Steel bt Pak Boards 25-8, 25-16, 25-13.

Indian Punjab bt AJK 25-13, 25-19, 25-13.

Islamabad bt Sindh 25-21, 25-16, 25-11.

Police bt Wapda 25-22, 25-15, 25-18

Positions after preliminary phase:

Group A: Indian Punjab (1st), PAF (2nd);

Group B: Police, Wapda;

Group C: Army, Punjab; Group D: POF, NWFP

Quarterfinals: Indian Punjab v Punjab, Police v NWFP, Army v PAF, POF v Wapda.
