SUKKUR, Dec 5: About 400 irrigation employees held a demonstration and staged a sit-in in front of the Sukkur Barrage office for about three hours on Monday, demanding acceptance of their demands. They were led by Dhani Bux Lehri and Sikandar Ali Pathan.
They raised slogans against irrigation authorities and in favour of their demands.
They demanded restoration of employment quota for children of deceased employees, removal of employees appointed without merit, removal of the executive engineer, Sukkur Barrage, for his alleged involvement in misappropriation of funds worth 15 million.
They also demanded immediate recovery of the SDO, Irrigation, Shahnawaz Bhutto, who was kidnapped by armed bandits 15 days ago, and payment of dues to daily wage employees.
They warned that they would close canals if their demands were not accepted.
ROBBERY: An amount of Rs400,000 was looted by armed bandits from a wholesale shop of the Pakistan Tobacco Company on Monday morning.
Sukkur Small Traders’ Association president Haroon Memon criticized the incident and expressed concern over the law and order situation in the city. He said robbery incidents had become a routine.
He also accused some police officers of involvement in such crimes.
HUNGER STRIKE: A hunger strike by disabled people outside the press club entered the third day on Monday. Two of them, Qabool Kandhro and Adam Buriro, fell ill who were provided medical aid at the camp.
They demanded restoration of 2 per cent quota for the disabled in government services, regular payment of Zakat and free education for the disabled.
