Decision not to be taken in haste: PM

Published December 5, 2005

KARACHI, Dec 4: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has reiterated that all provinces will be taken into confidence on construction of water reservoirs, including the Kalabagh dam.

Talking to representatives of Sindhi media in the state guest-house here on Sunday, he said that all decisions about reservoirs would be taken in line with aspirations of all segments of society. No decision about dams would be taken in haste, he added.

He said that reports of all committees, including the ANG Abbasi-led committee on the water issue would be made public soon and provided to the Sindhi, Urdu and English media.

The Kotri barrage downstream review report had been received and action on it would be taken soon, he said.

The prime minister said that water reservoirs were imperative for the country and in future, if not today, these would be needed. Only a small number of reservoirs were in the country and “we would have to face severe difficulties in future,” he added.

The government, he said, was taking note of the opinion being expressed on the issue and wanted to solve the problems faced by the people of Sindh. A mass contact campaign had been launched, he added. — Online
