LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday sought a reply from Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) on a petition challenging the disposal of waste by burning it.
The petitioner contended that the company burnt the waste collected from the city which caused air pollution. He said the act of the company was illegal and a violation of the environment related laws.
He asked the court to restrain the LWMC from burning the garbage of the city and order it to adopt other means to dispose it of that would not harm the environment.
Justice Shahid Karim issued a notice to the LWMC and sought a reply on the matter within one week.
POLYPROPYLENE BAGS: Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court on Thursday issued notices to the provincial environment protection department and other respondents on a petition seeking a ban on polypropylene bags.
The petitioner, Shahbaz Muzammil, contended that the polypropylene bags were being used as alternative to plastic bags, which had been banned under an order passed by the court.
However, he said, these bags were nothing but the plastic itself.
The petitioner submitted that non-woven bags looked different from conventional plastic bags in appearance and many assumed that these were not plastic and were environment friendly.
He asked the court to direct the respondents to immediately stop manufacturing and sale of all type of plastic shopping bags in compliance with the court’s orders. The judge directed the respondents to submit reports within a fortnight.
