KHYBER: Unidentified gunmen killed a traffic policeman in Bara tehsil of Khyber district here on Thursday.

Traffic constable Mustafa was performing duty in the Bara Bazaar when assailants opened fire on him, killing him on the spot. A passerby was also injured in the firing, according to a statement issued from the district police office in Shah Kas.

The injured person was shifted to Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar.

The statement said that the police had cordoned off the locality and also conducted a search operation in the locality and on the entry and exit points of Bara.

Meanwhile, relatives of the martyred Khasadar and Levies personnel demonstrated in Landi Kotal on Thursday to press the authorities to meet the promise of recruiting their near ones in the police force.

The protesters held placards inscribed with slogans in support of their demands.

The protesters said nearly 150 former Khasadar and Levies personnel had sacrificed their lives during the war against terrorism in Bara, Jamrud and Landi Kotal nearly a decade ago, but their families were yet to be compensated.

They said that the then political administration had promised that family members of the martyred men would be recruited in their place, but to no avail.

They said that after the merger of tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, they had approached the Khyber district police officer in Jamrud a number of times, but to no avail.

The protesters warned to block the Peshawar-Torkham highway if their demand was not met within one week.
