KARACHI, Nov 30: The duration of water supply in many localities, especially those hooked to the Hub dam source, will be curtailed from Thursday to overcome the impact of 13 million gallons of water per day being reduced from the Hub source from the same day.

The localities whose water supply timings and duration are likely to be affected in the wake of short water supply from Hub source include townships of Orangi, Baldia, Surjani, Shershah, Manghopir, SITE (both residential and industrial), Qasba, and parts of the North Karachi Town.

According to a decision reached at a high-level meeting held recently in Islamabad, both beneficiaries of the Hub dam source – Karachi and Lasbella (including the Hub industrial area) – would be supplied 89 mgd and 51 mgd of water from Thursday against their allocated quota of 100 mgd and 59 mgd, respectively.

The decision which, according to sources, is aimed at continuously getting water from the drying Hub dam for another five to five-and-half months was taken at high-level meeting held in Islamabad on Nov 25.

The meeting was attended by adviser to federal minister on water and power, provincial irrigation secretaries of both the Sindh and Balochistan governments and senior officials of Wapda and the KWSB.

The sources said that though the city’s supply from these sources was being reduced by 11 mgd of water from the Hub source, the actual quantity of water to be slashed from the city’s quota will be 13 mgd, because it also includes two mgd water for Bund Murad.

Apprising about the latest situation of the Hub dam reservoir, the sources said that water level in the reservoir had already reached 298 RL (Reservoir Level) due to the dry monsoon season as against its dead storage level of 277 RL.

The meeting participants who took the decision of curtailing water supply from the Hub source will meet again in February to review its decision.

SHORTAGE: Complaints of water shortage have already been received from Nazimabad No 3, North Nazimabad’s blocks S and T, various sectors of North Karachi, Clifton’s Block 2, Mehmoodabad, Akhtar Colony and Kharadar.
