Ishrat for institution building

Published November 30, 2005

KARACHI, Nov 29: Institution building is the most important job in the country and it needs immediate attention, says State Bank Governor Dr Ishrat Husain. The SBP chief stated this while talking to Dawn during his visit to the newspaper on Tuesday.

“We are good at policymaking, but the implementation of policies is the real task for economic managers,” the SBP governor said. He said that his focus was to develop the banking institution and expressed his satisfaction that the State Bank report on economy matched the world standard.

He stressed the need for improving data collection in the country and agreed that the quality of data still needed to be improved.

He suggested that the Federal Bureau of Statistics should be made an autonomous body so that it could produce quality and remove doubts. He said the autonomous FBS could improve trust and credibility of the data provided by it.

Dr Ishrat said he used to welcome criticism that provided an input to understand the response of any policy or strategy. The SBP governor was highly grateful to the media and said it supported him to communicate with the people and to create awareness of the reforms introduced in the banking sector.
