RAWALPINDI: Since the Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) is committed to following the 10 principles of the UN charter, it has become a member of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).

UNAI is an initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in supporting and contributing to the realisation of United Nations goals and mandates, including the promotion and protection of human rights, access to education, sustainability and conflict resolution.

UNAI has over 1,400 member institutions in more than 147countries that reach over 25 millionpeople in the education and research sectors around the world representing a global diversity of regions and a thematic wealth of disciplines.

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar congratulated RMU in his tweet” “Proud of VC Umar & faculty of RMUfor RMU’s membershipof @UN & @UNESCO reflecting Pakistan’s unis attaining international standards. Merit & transparency is the key to success of education in Pakistan #PakistanMovingForward.”

RMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Umer told Dawn that the university was notified on Sept 7 last year by UNAI.

“By becoming a member, RMU is committed to supporting and advancing 10 points of UNAI, i.e. addressing poverty, capacity building, education for all, global citizenship, access to higher education, human rights, intercultural dialogue, peace and conflict resolution, sustainability and United Nations Charter. RMU will be displayed on all websites of the UN and will be involved in all academic activities and programmes. This is another step forward in making RMU a global institution,” he said.

He said another well reputed organisation is “Network on Education Quality Monitoring in the Asia Pacific (NEQMAP).”

Recently, RMU became its member and it is also linked with UNESCO and its main office is in UNESCO, Bangkok. Being its member, RMU will be involved in all academic initiatives and programmes of the UNESCO Asia Pacific region.

He said that RMU is very young university in the field of medicine. In short time of four years RMU was ranked No. 1 university in Pakistan by the World ranking agency “Times Higher Education” (THE).

He said that RMU also enormously contributed to research at national and international level. The university also had numerous welfare and awareness projects for out-research community. University is well linked with international universities all over the globe.
