ISLAMABAD: A teenage girl committed suicide by jumping into Rawal Dam on Friday evening.

According to a senior police official, the 19-year-old girl from Punjgran area of Islamabad visited Lake View Park with a friend and jumped into the lake.

Officials from the Secretariat police station reached the spot along with CDA and the capital administration staff.

A senior official of the ICT administration said the girl had left her house 20 days ago and had been living with a friend in Sadiqabad, Rawalpindi.

“Apparently, she ran away from home and after 20 days’ stay with the friend committed suicide,” he said.

As neither the civic agency nor the ICT administration has trained divers, the CDA requested Pakistan Navy for help.

The director general public relations of the navy in a statement said their diver Abdul Rehman recovered the body on Friday night.

“The search operation in the ice cold waters of the dam was conducted immediately on receiving call for assistance from Islamabad police and CDA,” the statement said.

Diving teams form the navy are stationed at the sports clubs at Rawal Dam since the mid-1990s and they have performed various search and rescue operations in northern areas and at Mangla Dam.

Later, Rescue 1122 shifted the body to a hospital from where it was handed over to the family by the Islamabad police.
