ISLAMABAD, Nov 22: Japan on Tuesday extended a grant of $202,288 (Rs12 million) to three organizations for their water supply, sanitation and health sector projects in Kohat, Sindh and Balochistan.

The agreement was signed between Japanese Ambassador Nabuaki Tanaka and representatives of the organizations. The amount will be provided from the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project of the government of Japan.

Out of the total amount, $79,126 would be provided to Pakistan Community Development Programme for its water and sanitation projects in Dera Adamkhel and frontier region of Kohat.

The grant will be used for construction of 13 deep and 25 shallow tubewells, installation of 25 hand pumps and five submersible pumps and water tanks. Moreover, 350 soak pit toilets would be constructed. The project would benefit 12,000 residents.

A $79,773 grant would be released to the Mercy Corps Pakistan to complement its tuberculosis cases detection and treatment projects in nine remote districts of Balochistan and Sindh having a total population of 6.3 million.

The remaining grant of $43,389 will be provided to the Indus Earth Trust for the provision of drinking water to the residents of Shams Pir Island, located some 15 kilometres from Karachi.
