No Basant next year: Nazim

Published November 23, 2005

LAHORE, Nov 22: District Nazim Mian Amer has said there is no possibility of Basant celebrations next year. Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, he said Basant would not be celebrated next year because all festivals, including the Eid, were being celebrated with simplicity in view of a large-scale devastation caused due to earthquake.

He said the City District Government Lahore had welcomed the imposition of a ban on kite flying by the Supreme Court, and its teams were cooperating with the police for its enforcement. He said a permanent ban on kite flying was the only solution to the problems like injuries and deaths of people and power trippings.

The nazim said the federal government was engaged in seismic zoning of different parts of the country. The district government had already formed a committee to review building regulations in accordance with the requirements of the seismic zone in which the city was placed.

polls: Elections of naib nazims of town and district councils will be held by a show of hands after an amendment to the election rules.

The provincial government will amend the rules immediately after the Punjab Assembly session after which the elections of naib nazims will be held.

The naib nazims were not elected along with nazims of town and district councils because of the procedure of secret ballot adopted for the purpose.
