KARACHI, Nov 22: The Sindh health department on Tuesday set up a committee of senior doctors to look into the possible causes of the death of Dr Yusra Afaq, who was suspected of contracting Congo virus and died at Aga Khan hospital on Sunday.

A health department notification said that the three-member committee, headed by Dr Illahi Bukhsh Soomro as convener, would probe the death of Dr Yusra and would ascertain probable cause of her death, whether it was due to viral haemorrhagic fever or something else.

The committee, which includes Prof Khalid Mehmood and Dr Agha Nadir as member, is required to submit its report within 10 days.

Meanwhile, a house-job doctors committee at a press conference said that proper safety measures at their work place would have averted the deaths of Dr Yusra and Dr Zia Siddiqi, who died reportedly due to haemorrhagic fever a few months back.

They demanded setting up of an isolation ward at the CHK and other hospitals, provision of anti-viral treatment for the condition suspected to be the viral haemorrhagic fever and supply of other surgical accessories for routine use by doctors.

However, a number of medical house-officers are still showing unwillingness to resume their duties due to the lack of necessary safety gadgets.

They are also expressing their dissatisfaction over the isolation ward being formed for such cases as according to them, the ward or facility in question is not properly quarantined as per the requirements.

PIMA: The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association Karachi on Tuesday expressing serious concern over the death of Dr Yusra Afaq asked the authorities to carry out preventive measures on war footing basis, PPI adds.

PIMA President Dr Misbahul Aziz and Vice-president Dr Suhail demanded thorough examination of all the doctors, nurses and paramedics of the Civil Hospital Karachi.

They further said that compensation should be paid to the heirs of the deceased doctor.
