LAKKI MARWAT: Unknown armed men killed a police official near a fruit and vegetable market in Bannu on Saturday.

The police said that the incident occurred in the limits of Mandan police station. The martyred cop, identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Asghar, had gone to the market for shopping, they maintained. The armed men riding a motorcycle attacked him near the Gate No-II of the market and escaped.

ASI Asghar, who was posted as Muharrar (investigation officer) in the police lines, sustained wounds and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital in Bannu city, but he could not survive, they added.

The police said that a large contingent had reached the place soon after the attack and surrounded the area to look for the attackers.

The body of the deceased was taken to the police lines after fulfilling medico-legal formalities in the hospital, where his funeral prayer was offered.

Regional police officer Sajid Ali Khan, Bannu district police officer Imran Shahid, other police officials and relatives of the deceased attended the funeral prayers.
