KARACHI, Nov 21: Karachi Gymkhana Club’s veteran pair, Naseem Arzoo-Ghaffar Qureshi outbid the established pair Ziaullah-Hamid to win the Mitchell Movement title on Sunday in the weekend duplicate bridge programme of Karachi Bridge Association by an impressive score of 61.58 per cent.

Ziaullah-Hamid must be repenting over missed opportunities as they lost the top berth by a whisker when they took it lightly and doubled a part score which their opponents doubled, giving them all the important clues.

Zia-Hamid scored 59.84 per cent for the second and Qasim Memon-S M Hasnain finished third at 56.87 per cent.

Siddiqui brothers, veterans Azmatullah-Lutfullah topped from east-west direction with a score of 59.63 per cent, punishing overbids and making their own biddable hands.

Irfan Saadat Khan-Tanvir Mazhar put up a spirited fight but their efforts fell short and they finished second with 57.70 per cent. Slightly behind them Asghar Naqvi-Asghar Abbas finished third at 56.60 per cent.

Fourteen teams contested Swiss Movement Programme on Sunday evening.

Candyland with its regular outfit, Hamid Mohiuddin, Khalid Mohiuddin, Hasan Askari, Ziaullah and Mubashir Puri scored 96 victory points (VPs) to win the title defeating Captains 24-6, Pasha 25-5, Aggressive 22-8 and Fine Foods 16-14 and losing third round match to Four Bidders 9-21.

Aggressive with Saleem Ahmed, Ghulam Muhammad, Raees Ahmed, Shahab Sarki and Anis scored 88 VPs netting 20-10 from Attackers, 22-8 from Dynamo, 23-7 from Alliance, sharing 30 VPs equally with Ahmed IV and losing to Candyland 8-22, Fine Foods, and Four Bidders. Both scored 86 VPs.

However, the tie went in favour of Aggressive for their better Imps in four victories. Rashid Shamsi, Ibrahim Baig, Khalid Zaki and F A Naeem played well for Fine Foods.—PPI
