NATIONAL SAVINGS

Published

NATIONAL SAVINGS: This refers to the report ‘NSS outflows reduce government’s borrowing options’ (Dec 7), which has quoted State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) data reflecting heavy outflows from the savings accounts against drastically reduced inflows. Obviously, the main reason is the unprecedented increase in cost of living, which leaves little room for savings. But the change in the age-old nomination rules, stripping the account holders of the right to nominate beneficiaries of their choice, is also a big reason. This has forced the ‘savers’ to go for other options.

TRAFFIC POLICE: Sharea Faisal usually remains jam-packed with vehicles during rush hours, especially in the mornings and in the evenings. Most of the commuters are in a hurry to reach their offices on time, but traffic constables,

who are supposed to ensure smooth flow of traffic, create hurdles by not fulfilling their duties and by spending time on harassing the drivers. The adminis-tration must take note of the matter.

EDUCATION FOR ALL: Although Article 25A of the Constitution ensures the right to free education, it remains a distant dream as education requires infrastructure, teachers and facilities that cannot be provided without the availability of funds. By the looks of it, society and communities will have to devise their own mechanisms to fund local educational institutions to ensure free education for all.

CIVIC SENSE: The municipal committee of Rohri has started a cleanliness drive across the city which is a praiseworthy step, but, disappointingly, due to the lack of civic sense the citizens are throwing garbage, including plastic and solid waste, on the streets, causing blockage of sewerage lines and hampering the cleanliness drive. The authorities concerned should organise seminars on civic sense and create awareness among the masses.
