UET holds convocation

PESHAWAR, Nov 16: NWFP Governor Khalilur Rehman on Wednesday said that the standard of construction of government buildings in quake-affected areas was not up to the mark and they had failed to withstand the quake while many other buildings remained unaffected.

Speaking at the 9th convocation of the NWFP University of Engineering and Technology (UET), he regretted the poor standard of the construction of public buildings and added that the issue would not go unattended.

He lauded the role of Higher Education Commission chairman Dr Attaur Rehman in institutional development of the education sector in the country.

He appreciated the increasing number of PhDs passing out from UET and stressed that 25 per cent of the teaching staff of every institute should be PhDs.

UET Vice-Chancellor Syed Imtiaz Hussain Gilani in his speech said the university worked closely with the faculty and administration of its sister universities.

“It is a testament to their dedication and hard work that an island of academic tranquillity is created, in this rough geo-political neighbourhood, where people are engaged in the finer pursuits of research and higher learning,” he said.
