BAHAWALNAGAR: Police claim to have arrested a man who tortured his wife after tying her upside down over her refusal to allow him to contract second marriage with her sister.

The arrest was made after the IGP took notice of the incident a video of which went viral on social media. The man can be seen clubbing his wife after tying her legs and feet with a rope and hanging her upside down.

Police sources said Muhammad Hussain, a resident of Ranjheywala village, tied the knot with Shamim Bibi 10 years ago and the couple had two children. They said the couple developed differences and Hussain would torture his wife as he expressed his desire to marry his sister-in-law but his wife opposed it.

Sources said Shamim’s family often voiced concern over the brutality of her husband but he would intimidate them into silence. They said Hussain again tortured his wife while tying her legs and feet with a rope and hanging her upside down just two days ago. The suspect, they said, also recorded the torture video and later uploaded it on social media.

The video of the screaming woman went viral and drew attention of the provincial police chief on whose direction the Saddar police arrested the man and registered a case against him under sections 324, 354, 342 and 292 of PPC on the complaint of victim’s brother.

KILLS GRANDFATHER: A mentally-challenged teenage girl axed his grandfather to death at Marot here on Monday evening.

The family said Ghulam Qadir, 50, who belonged to Chak 318/HR, visited his son-in-law Allah Ditta at Chak 327/HR to inquire after him when his granddaughter Saman, 17, attacked him with an axe and repeated blows led to his death. The girl immediately fled and could not be traced till Tuesday evening.

Marot SHO Ahsan Farooq told Dawn that police had registered a case against the girl though the victim’s family was unwilling to pursue a case. He said police also had the postmortem conducted against the will of the victim’s family.

SHOT DEAD: A newly-wed couple was shot dead allegedly in the name of honour at Marot on Monday night, police said.

Abdul Razzaq, 35, and his wife Shabana, 25, were shot dead by her brothers Muhammad Bilal, Adnan and Ahmed near Chak 296/HR when the couple was returning home from Hasilpur.

Police said Abdul Razzaq contracted marriage with Shabana after divorcing her elder sister Haleema three months ago. The woman’s family had a grudge over which her brothers killed the couple.

The bodies were shifted to the Fort Abbas THQ hospital for medicolegal formalities.

The SHO said an FIR had been lodged against five men including three brothers of Shabana and raids were being conducted to arrest them.

SUSPENDED: The deputy commissioner has suspended from service four officials of the CEO Office under PEEDA Act and initiated an inquiry against them on corruption charges.

Sources said four health officials -- accountant Saeed Akhtar, radiographer Rashid Saeed and clerks Waseem Sajjad and Zahid Pervez -- had been suspended under section 6 of the PEEDA Act, 2006 over complaints of corruption, mismanagement and inefficiency and their previous service record.

They said a special inquiry committee had been constituted by the DC/Administrator of DHA to probe the matter and directed to submit its report within 90 days.
