DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a police constable doing security duty for polio workers here on Sunday.

A police official said constable Ikramullah, 34, was returning home after performing security duty with a polio team when unidentified assailants opened fire on him on the Multan Road. He was critically injured in the firing and later succumbed to injuries.

The official said the attackers riding a motorcycle also took away the official rifle and motorcycle of the martyred policeman.

As soon as the incident was reported, a contingent of cantonment police led by the DSP city reached the spot and launched a search operation to arrest the suspects.

Meanwhile, the ongoing anti-polio campaign in the areas near the Pak-Afghan border in South Waziristan continued on the fourth consecutive day on Sunday.

Talking to mediapersons in the District Headquarters Hospital, Wana, deputy commissioner Khalid Iqbal Khattak said special attention was being given in the polio campaign to the areas near the border, including Angoor Adda, Shawal and Kaniguram.

He added personnel of police, FC and other agencies were providing foolproof security to the polio teams.
