LAHORE, Nov 11: The Punjab PPP Executive Committee demanded on Friday that the president’s relief fund should be renamed as it was because of its nomenclature that not many people were making donations.

At a meeting held under the chairmanship of Qasim Zia, the participants said the people had differences with Gen Musharraf, and they were reluctant to offer donations. They believed once the fund’s name was changed, donors would come running to share their resources with the quake victims.

Naveed Chaudhry briefed reporters on the decisions. Central deputy information secretary Altaf Qureshi was also present.

The PPP leader said the functions of the parliament’s supervisory committee had not been defined, and the prime minister also looked like a powerless chief executive.

He was critical of the appointment of a retired general as NAB chairman, saying a retired judge would have been a better choice. Also, he said, it was regrettable that the retired generals had been assigned the relief and rehabilitation duties, undermining the civilian authorities.

Naveed Chaudhry said the quake victims were not expressed to get adequate funds as the government was more interested in making political gains out of the situation.

It was decided that the party’s foundation day — Nov 30 — would be celebrated at the district level.

The meeting was informed that various people had violated party discipline in the local elections, but reports about them had not been completed as yet.
