Johnson, Merkel call PM Imran on Afghan issue

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Khan on Tuesday received telephone calls from his British counterpart Boris Johnson and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and they exchanged views on the latest situation in Afghanistan.
Prime Minister Khan underscored the paramount importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan for Pakistan and the region. He stressed that safety and security as well as protection of the rights of all Afghans was critically important.
The prime minister underlined that an inclusive political settlement was the best way forward. He said Pakistan was reaching out to all Afghan leaders. The international community must also stay engaged, particularly to support the people of Afghanistan economically.
He highlighted the positive role that Pakistan played in facilitating the evacuation of diplomatic personnel and staff of international organisations and others from Afghanistan.
Mr Johnson and Ms Merkel agreed to remain in touch with Mr Khan with respect to the evolving situation in Afghanistan.
In the bilateral context, Prime Minister Khan highlighted the extensive measures taken by Pakistan to contain Covid-19, and said relevant data had been shared with the UK and called for the removal of Pakistan from the red list of the UK.
In conversation with Ms Merkel, the prime minister expressed satisfaction at regular high-level exchanges between Pakistan and Germany. He said Pakistan looked forward to enhancing collaboration with Germany in all areas of mutual interest.

@Timur, and you think it worked? I doubt it did. In my opinion, every crisis creates opportunities, and this time it might work in favor of Pakistan if PM plays smartly. He must not allow the free flow of Afghans to Pakistan because they will create problems for Pakistan as we have witnessed in the past. Instead, PM should only allow diplomates of other countries or government officials to enter Pakistan and to be taken by their respective embassies to make transit arrangement.

In the talks, did Imran khan talk to Mr. Johnson about removing pakistan from red list country list? PM khan was mum when flights were suspended from GCC as well. I think his focus should be more on overseas pakistanis as he will slowly loose out on foreign remittances if overseas pakistanis get fed up and move their families abroad as well.

After the fiasco in Afghanistan with the combined US Military might and NATO, I don't think there is a single nation on earth who wants to mess in this part of the globe - knowing what Pakistan is capable of.
Even the Chinese are now taunting Taiwan, not to count on the US to come to their aid.

Am still of the opinion Pak should not let India sit in Afghan talks. If others insist for including India in talks pak should walk out of talks. Rest assured Russia and China with France and Germany won't mind talks without India. USA will back India and with current position Pak should not budge in. USA will give in. Else, pak should insist on putting Kashmir on agenda besides Afg issue.
India is at weaker position after fleeing Afg. We can corner them.
