Banker’s killer held in Karachi

GUJRANWALA, Nov 1: Police claimed to have arrested from Karachi a man allegedly involved in killing of a bank manager during a dacoity bid in Eminabad. The police said the accused, Akhtar Gujjar, and his accomplices had killed the manager, Ayaz Ahmad, about a month ago.

As many as three dacoits and four policemen were also killed during an encounter when the police chazed the dacoits.

The police had declared Gujjar a fugitive.

Later, on a tip-off that he was in Karachi, a police party arrested him in a raid.

QUAKE VICTIMS: As many as 90 quake victims who were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital here from Muzaffarabad and Bagh areas some two weeks ago have been discharged after treatment.

The hospital administration told journalists at a briefing on Tuesday that 47 patients, including 10 children and 28 women, were still being treated at the CMH.

The administration gave Rs10,000 to each of the injured from prime minister’s fund, besides relief goods.

It is learnt that about two dozen injured had already been shifted to Sialkot for treatment.

RELEASE: The district criminal coordination committee urged the jail authority to release women and their sucklings before Eid.

The committee also directed the jail authority to provide a complete list of women detained along with their sucklings because of their involvement in criminal cases.

The committee’s meeting held on Tuesday was presided over by district and sessions judge Chaudhry Mazhar Husain Minhas. SP (Headquarters) Zaeem Iqbal, jail superintendent Malik Shaukat Feroze, district attorney Masood Ahmad Ghumman and other senior officers also attended the meeting.

The meeting, expressing its dissatisfaction over the police performance, directed that the challan should be completed within the stipulated period so that cases could swiftly be decided in courts.
