District police officer Kashif Zulfiqar told reporters here on Friday that 1,800 police personnel would be tasked with ensuring the security of mourners and participants of Muharram processions.

He said 35 mourning processions would taken out and 190 majalis would be held across the district during the first 10 days of Muharram, while 1,800 police personnel from the regular and Elite Force would be deployed inside and outside imambargahs and along procession routes.

The DPO said the platoons of Frontier Constabulary and Army would remain stand alert and on call for the assistance of police.

He said since Haripur district hosted Afghan refugees in large numbers, the police and district administration had decided to restrict them to their camps for 10 days of Muharram.

Mr Zulfiqarsaid extra force was being deployed on the exit of and entrance to the district for vigilance.

He said the mourning processions would be monitored to prevent any untoward incident, while alternative routes had been identified and approved for safety reasons for ensuring uninterrupted flow of traffic.
