ISLAMABAD, Oct 28: The October 8 massive earthquake has completely destroyed the network of the lady health workers (LHWs), both in Azad Kashmir and northern NWFP, a meeting of the National Disaster Management Committee was informed here on Friday.

During the meeting, secretary health Anwar Mehmood directed the authorities concerned to mobilize the available LHWs in the affected areas to help provide medical relief at the field hospitals set up in different areas.

It was also decided to re-establish health houses destroyed by the quake so that activities of the LHW programme could resume.

During the meeting it was told that a 41-member Chinese relief team has arrived in Pakistan to establish a medical camp at the earthquake-hit Battagram district of the NWFP.

The team will reinforce the existing medical relief activities being undertaken by Ministry of Health and teams from Japan and Ukraine in the area.

Similarly a ten-member German team, which is arriving soon, will be a self-contained medical team with a fully equipped field hospital to be established in Buttl (NWFP).

Secretary Health Anwar Mehmood was informed during the meeting that OMW, a well known oil company, has offered to provide four containers of relief goods including medical supplies for the quake-affected areas. In view of the offer, the officers concerned of the ministry were directed to develop a demand of the most needed supplies.— Staff Reporter
