PESHAWAR: The Tehkal police arrested three protesting students of Islamia College University (ICU) for blocking the main University Road here on Wednesday.
A police official said members of the Khalil Students Organisation had been protesting since Tuesday to press on with their demands of giving autonomy to the university hostels, reduction in fines and replacement of the registrar and treasurer of the varsity. He said on Wednesday about 200 students walked out of the campus and blocked the main University Road.
The official said a student was injured when the angry protesters pelted police personnel with stones after the protest was dispersed.
He said following a request from the ICU administration, the matter was referred to the Tehkal police station, which registered FIR under sections 341 and 147 of PPC.
The arrested students were identified as Arbab Waqas, Tanveer Elahi and Ihsanullah.
An ICU letter addressed to the police stated that the administration had held talks with the protesting students and accepted three out of seven demands. However, the letter said the remaining demands including removal of registrar and treasurer were not accepted, hence the students walked out of the meeting and staged protest.
