LAHORE, Oct 25: US Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker has said that the sentiments shown by Lahorites for providing relief to earthquake victims of Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir deserve appreciation.
Talking to District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood after a briefing on the contribution made by the people of Lahore in the efforts for providing relief to the affected people at the Jinnah Hall here on Tuesday, the ambassador said they had shown great large-heartedness.
The nazim informed the ambassador that camps had been set up at the town and union council levels in the city district for collecting relief goods for the earthquake victims. The city district government arranged the dispatch of relief goods for distribution among the victims.
He also briefed the ambassador about the CDG plans for improvement in water supply and sewerage facilities. He said the CDG was also paying special attention to education and had decided to establish a model school in every town.
APP ADDS: Talking to the press after signing MoU for formalizing cooperation between Punjab Assembly and USAID at Punjab Assembly here on Tuesday, US Ambassador Ryan Crocker said that America had provided substantial assistance to Pakistan and would provide more to help it in its relief efforts and carrying out rehabilitation and reconstruction work in the quake-devastated areas.
He said, “The US government and people sympathize with the Pakistani nation and fully share their grief at the tragedy which has played havoc in Kashmir and NWFP, claimed many lives and caused injures to others.”
He said the US troops were also playing an important role in carrying out relief operation and they had also set up field hospitals, besides helping in clearing access roads to the quake- stricken areas.
To a question, he said the world community had responded well in providing assistance to Pakistan and “I think Pakistan have appreciated the help being extended by international community to carry out relief operation in quake-stricken areas.”
