KARACHI: Habib University held its fourth annual convocation virtually on Saturday in which 162 students were given graduation degrees.

Held online due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was streamed live online and was viewed by the university’s leadership, faculty, students, parents, alumni, staff and the large community of supporters, according to a statement issued here.

Renowned writer and television personality Anwar Maqsood gave the commencement speech.

Speaking in his distinct style, he talked about the country’s current problems, corruption and economic situation.

However, Maqsood reminded the graduates that they still have their freedom.

“The fourth caravan of young graduates from this institution arrived at its destination today. But you must not stop to rest at this juncture — there is much work to be done. The future of this country is in your hands, just like your degree. It is your duty to care for it, and to protect it.

“I want to explain to you just how much hope I have because of you. You are graduating from such a great institution and you may very well be moving to different countries, but never forget Pakistan,” he said, urging students to remember their roots, hold on to the Urdu language, and their great education at the university as they work towards a bright future for the country.

Habib University president Wasif Rizvi congratulated the graduating students and praised them for their diligence and hard work amid the pandemic.

Imran Ismail, Governor of Sindh, envisioned the students to be the architects of Pakistan’s bright future.

“My message to you is that your parents and your faculty have provided you with the best education in the world in the best institution in the world. From here it is up to you to strive and struggle,” he said, adding that “this country has faith in you. This country’s future is in your hands, you are the ones who take this country forward”.

In his motivational message to the graduating class, Chancellor Rafiq M. Habib said: “As you embark on the new part of your journey, make sure you adhere to the principles of Yohsin. And I am confident that whether you pursue further education or a career, you are ready to face any adversity that might come your way.”

In total, 162 students graduated this year with degrees awarded from the university’s two schools, namely the Dhanani School of Science and Engineering (DSSE) and the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS).

From the DSSE, 84 students graduated. Of these, 33 students received BS degrees in electrical engineering, and 51 students received BS degrees in computer science.

From AHSS, 78 students graduated. Of these, 45 students received BSc (Honours) degrees in social development and policy, and 33 students received a BA (Honours) degree in communication and design.

The university’s highest award, Chancellor’s Yohsin Medal, was presented to Sarah Khan, a social development and policy major. The President’s Medal was awarded to Muhammad Abdullah Siddiqui, an electrical engineering major.
