UNITED NATIONS, Oct 23: Expressing her extreme sorrow over the ‘horrible earthquake tragedy’ in Pakistan, British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s wife Cherie Blair said that British people were doing everything they could for the victims.

Mrs Blair had come to the United Nations to a dinner hosted by the UN Association of New York to announce the launch of the Loomba Trust, and International Widows day, which she heads. The trust is promoting June 23 as International Widows Day to spotlight the injustices to women who’ve lost their husbands.

Talking to Dawn at a pre-dinner reception, Mrs Blair said: “I know the Britons will do all they can to help Pakistanis in their hour of need.”

Later speaking at the dinner to highlight the plight of widows she said: “Our aim is to get the plight of widows across the world recognized internationally.

“The sad thing is, of course, the widows are a real resource for the world, and if we can help them they will put their efforts into supporting their families. If they’re not supported ... then not only do the widows suffer but their children suffer as well.”
