Plea to abolish entry test

Published October 23, 2005

MULTAN, Oct 22: Nishtar Medical College and Hospital principal executive officer (PEO) Prof Dr Shabbir Ahmad Nasir has said there is no need to continue the entry test for admission to medical colleges.

He observed that students admitted to medical colleges before the introduction of entry test were equally intelligent and able to pursue medical studies.

He said the chief minister had sought comments from the principals of medical colleges on whether to continue or abolish the entry test system.

Dr Shabbir said he had formed a committee comprising senior doctors to seek their opinion, however, he personally believed that the entry test was a futile exercise.

Commenting on reports that only 76 out of 2,700 examinees have qualified the entry test from 13 districts of south Punjab, he said if true, then some serious mistake seems to have been committed somewhere in compiling the results.

He said the matter was also raised in the Punjab Assembly, and the House has ordered an inquiry.

Dr Shabbir observed that the issue would impact the future of hundreds of students of south Punjab, so it should be thoroughly probed and thought out.—APP
