BAHAWALPUR: A man was killed when eight armed men opened fire in the thickly populated narrow Phatianwali Gali of the Machi Bazaar here on Saturday night.

According to police, the motive behind the firing was old litigation between the brothers of the deceased, Muhammad Irfan aliasBhaloo, and the suspects, who managed to flee from the scene.

According to the first information report registered on Sunday under sections 302, 148, 149 and 109 of the PPC on the complaint of Muhammad Irshad, a brother of the victim, eight people, including Mirza Masood Beg, Mirza Mansoor Beg, Abdul and five unidentifiedmen, at the behest of Mirza Naeem Beg opened fire on Irfan in the street and seriously injured him.

He was rushed to Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) but died on the way. Irshad claimed that sometime back they had got a case registered against the suspects, who had threatened Irfan and his brothers to withdraw it otherwise they would be taken to task.

Kotwali police said that efforts were afoot to arrest the culprits, whilethe body of Irfan was sent to BVH for post-mortem.

VACCINATION CENTRES: Five Covid-19 vaccination centres have been made functional in the city.

According to Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali Kathia, the centres have been established at Government Tibbia College, Government Sadiq Girls High School on Darbar Road, Government Degree College for special education on Jhangiwali Road, Government Girls High School in Model Town A and Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Satellite Town.

He appealed to everyone aged 50 years and above to visit the centres and get themselves vaccinated.

Meanwhile, according to health department officials, two people died of Covid-19 in the district in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of victims of the virus to 180 here. Besides, 55 people tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours in the district.
