HYDERABAD, Jan 22: A group of the students of Chemical Engineering Department, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, has prepared a low cost insulating material, which may effectively be used for industrial and general purposes.

To meet the requirements, bottom ash of Lakhra coal power plant and thermal asphalt were used at different ratios and the produced material was put under several tests such as thermal conductivity, heat resistance and mechanical strength.

It was found that the prepared material had very low conductivity and high resistance to heat flow. The material can be used for roof flooring and the industrial application is limited to 180 Centigrade.

The students of final year 97-batch, Shafquat-un-Nisa, Allah Bachayo, Abdul Hussain, Tahira and Rakhshandah for the completion of their BE degree conducted research on this project under the supervision of Prof Munawwar Ahmed Memon, chairman, and Inamullah Bhatti, lecturer of Chemical Engineering Department.

The supervisors are of the opinion that the efficiency of the material can be enhanced more with the addition of other materials which are bad conductors of heat and highly resistant to flow of heat.
