LAHORE, Oct 17: The Punjab government with the cooperation of people, sent 400 more trucks of relief items to the quake-hit areas on Monday. Out of these, 200 trucks were sent from Lahore and as many from other districts, besides relief goods dispatched by other volunteer organizations and individuals.
This was said by the Punjab director-general (relief) during a briefing here on Monday.
He claimed that so far 3,400 trucks had been sent through the Punjab government. He said the calamity-hit people desperately needed tents and blankets.
Meanwhile, some 85 trucks of relief goods have been sent to the quake-hit areas from Multan, claimed a handout of the Punjab government here on Monday.
The Punjab Social Welfare Department, with the help of local NGOs, had established relief camps on important crossings of the city which collected tents, blankets, medicines, eatables and other items of daily use.
These goods were sent to the quake-hit areas on Monday. On the instruction of the Punjab government, Nishter Hospital has also sent a 50-member doctors team to the affected areas, the handout said.
Similarly, the Bahawalpur district government has also sent 53 truckloads of relief items to the areas. These trucks carried 126 tents, 8,419 bags of food items, 4,038 beds (including blankets), 52 packets of medicines and 3,218 of other items. Police officers and government officials were also sent with the trucks to ensure their safety.
Anjuman-e-Tajran of Rail Bazaar, Faisalabad also dispatched 10 trucks of relief items to the quake-hit areas, it said.
