SUKKUR, Oct 17: A two-judge bench of the Sindh High Court, Sukkur circuit, directed police to arrest 22 people, including Sardar Khamiso Khan Shar, Latif Dino Shar and Ghulam Nabi Shar, and produce them in the court on Tuesday morning.

The bench comprised Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani and Justice Ameer Hani Muslim.

The court issued the orders on a petition filed by Advocate Shabbir Shar.

He said that a jirga which was held on last Thursday in the Sadaruddin village of Nara taluka, Khairpur district, declared Nooran, wife of Ghulam Nabi Chachar, as kari, with Shabbir Shar and ordered punishment for them.

In the meantime, members of the jirga and relatives of Ghulam Nabi Chachar attacked Nooran with firearms and injured her and her relative.

The court accepted the petition and directed Sorah SHO Hafiz Mohammad Chachar to arrest the accused.

WORKSHOP: Incidents of violence against women indicate that Pakistan in general and Sindh in particular are not safe for women who make 51 per cent of the nation.

This was the consensus of the speakers at a workshop with the theme of “the role of media and violence against women”, held under the aegis of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and World Church Service here on Sunday.

They further observed that the increased coverage to human rights violations especially the incidents of violence against women indicate media’s quick response to the alarming state of affairs.

They presented some case studies in which investigating officials remained harsh and hostile towards the victims, rather than facilitating them in accessing the justice.

Akhtar Baloch, Paryal Mari, Badar Soomro and Mazhar Leghari spoke on the occasion.
