LAHORE: Two cup events prominently mark the eight-race card drawn for the Lahore Winter meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

The Faiz Ahmad Faiz Cup — named after the renowned poet who carved a niche in the temple of Urdu ‘Ghazal’ poetry setting new dimensions to its diction style — is a class VI Division II, II and IV handicap race to be contested over 1,600 metres. Eight runners are to take part in this race, an annual feature of the Lahore racing calendar.

The prominent is the four-year-old colt Light Heavy, bred at a form owned by Lahore Race Club (LRC) chairman Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud. His main rivals will be filly Amazing Lips and colt Shah The Great, also bred at the Makhdum’s farm and both trained by Shahid Rehman.

The supporting feature, the Shergarh Cup, a class VII Division I to be gone over 1,400 metres has nine runners. The cup is named after the Irish and Epsom Derby winner Shergarh. Filly Breaking Bad look to be the better among eight rivals.

The first race will be held at 12.00noon.
