LARKANA, Oct 9: The central vice-chairman of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Dr Niaz Kalani, was arrested by Rangers on the outskirts of Qambar town on Sunday morning.

The JSQM leader was going to Larkana when a wagon he was travelling in was intercepted by Rangers near the Qambar grid station on the Shahdadkot road.

He was detained and drove to an undisclosed destination, sources said.

Meanwhile, a heavy contingent of police from Hyderabad raided the house of Sattar Hakiro, a leader of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz, in Ali Khan locality of the Qambar town.

They searched the house but did not find Sattar Hakiro so they detained his brother Abdul Jabbar Hakiro, a teacher in the Government High School Bagodero.

Police also broke into the house of Hafeez Azad Hakiro, the central press secretary of the JSQM, but he was not present in the house.

Sources said that the police party was in plain clothes during the raids.

Relatives of the arrested and activists of the PPP and the JSQM took out a procession.

The protestors were led by Punhal Soomro, Riaz Lakho, Anwar Khatoon and Kaneez Fatima.

They marched on the main roads and staged a sit-in at the Martyrs square.

They lashed out police for entering their houses without warrants.

Later, they demonstrated outside the Qambar press club and condemned the police action.

A heavy contingent of police barged into the house of Khair Mohammed Magsi, a member of the central committee of the Sindh Tarraqi Pasand Party in the Larkana city, and Reshman Magsi, the district president of the Sindh Nari Tehrik, on Saturday night.

Mr Magsi told Dawn on Sunday that police in 15 vehicles broke into his house and insulted his mother, Hoor Magsi.

He said the DPO had denied such raid.

Mr Magsi said the government arrested the nationalist leaders who were opposing the construction of Kalabagh dam.

SNF: The Sindh National Front following its election agreement with the PML-Q has nominated Munawar Abro, a nazim-elect from the Saedodero union council, as a candidate for the slot of district naib nazim.

Abdul Latif Bughio, the deputy secretary general (finance) of the SNF, said on Sunday that the Khushhal Pakistan Panel and the Sarwan Ittehad would vote for their candidate according to the agreement.
