CHICAGO: A Pakistani, said to be an expert in guerrilla warfare, was charged here yesterday [Jan 13] in connection with the alleged plot to kidnap US Presidential adviser Henry Kissinger and bomb Government buildings. The man, Iqbal Ahmad, 30, was indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday. He was arraigned before a US Commissioner here on charges of conspiring with Roman Catholic priest Philip Berrigan and four others to kidnap Mr. Kissinger. … Assistant U.S. Attorney Samuel Skinner named Ahmed as “one of the major conspirators in the (alleged) plot” and “an expert in guerrilla warfare”.

Mr. Ahmed, a fellow at the Adlai Stevenson Institute of Public Affairs here, was ordered to surrender his passport and to report weekly to a US marshal. Ahmad … taught at the Cornell University before coming to the University of Chicago….

A professor at Chicago ... said Ahmad has been associated with the anti-war movement in the United States and is respected ... for his strong belief in non-violent protest. The professor ... said the arrest was an “outrage to the scholarly community and an obvious political frameup”. [He said] Ahmad ... was [an] authority on the problem of the “third world” [and] was also writing a book on the Algerian revolution.
