GWADAR: Eleven members of royal family of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) arrived in Panjgur area of Makran division on Saturday to hunt houbara bustards, according to sources.

The official sources said members of the UAE’s royal family reached Panjgur airport aboard a special plane and were led by Shaikh Khalifa Saif-al-Nahyan and Sultan Saeed Ahmed. They were taken to their palace in Piry Jhalak by road amid tight security.

The delegation was received at the airport by Panjgur’s Deputy Commissioner Abdul Razzaq Sasoli, tribal elders Haji Attaullah Baloch, Haji Zahid Hussain, Haji Farooq-uz-Zaman and senior military and civilian officials.

The hunting party, equipped with hunting gear and falcons, would hunt houbara bustards during their stay in Panjgur under licence issued by the foreign ministry, the sources said.

Members of the UAE royal family, who visit Panjgur regularly for hunting the bird, have launched several development projects in the district, including water supply schemes and health facilities for deserving and underprivileged people of Panjgur town.

Dear Friends, I am from India and yes, may be you should see this comment with suspicion for this reason alone. But I just wanted to put it in record, as a citizen of one sovereign nation to other that this news is simply humiliating. Even putting aside the questions of conservation and ethics, allowing such practices with an appendage of the fact that The Royalty is carrying out development work seems utterly humiliating and shameful. These birds are found in Rajasthan also.But I have never heard of any Gulf Royals asking Indian government for license to shoot them. This inspite the well known fact that all Gulf countries have better ties with India. By the way just fir information of readers , local Baishno community does not allow any birds and animals to be harmed in any manner. More over no hunting license is given anywhere in India to shoot animals or birds.

Gone the days when houbara bustards were getting instinct. When a bird is so precious (1 bird cost around $ 1K) then how are you going to let it instinct? Currently, there are hundreds of captive breeding programs that are going on around the world to preserve the houbara bustards

The global population is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2014 Pakistan! please do not allow hunting of such endangered species. You have been blessed with such wonderful aspects of nature - why make your sovereignty in doubt

It's quite strange how our official stance against Israel is only limited to not allowing our citizens to visit Israel and not acknowledging Israel. We however we have no scruples acknowledging and allowing other Muslim nations like UAE, Saudis, (who not only acknowledge Israel but also don't disallow their citizens travelling there) to come and kill our endangered birds and wildlife. So the friends of enemies are our friends? I really wonder way our current PTI government is thinking.

These same birds are found across the border also, including the Great Sindhi a much larger bird of the same . family hunted to near extinction by natives and foreigners. India does not grant licences to hunt them. What is not known to many is that the visitors say that they hunt with falcons only, however, the people accompanying them use guns to hunt partridges and sandgrouse as well. The licences they hold are not restricted to the Houbara only.

Beautiful defenseless birds. So Sad. We no longer need to hunt for food, we have enough items for entertainment. Neither human society nor Wildlife is what it was few hundred years ago. Pakistan had perfect opportunity to do the right thing by focusing on conservation rather than hunting. But the realities are too strong & scary to ignore. Maybe someday.

These Arabs have leased out thousands of square kilometres from Govt of Pakistan. They have developed and heavily invested in the area and local population. They have hundreds of locals on their payrolls including. They’ve dug wells and have provided many facilities to the locals in areas such as Rahim Yar Khan , Multan and Bahawalpur. They’ve constructed local infrastructure too. They’ve released wildlife into these areas and have actually contributed to the increase in wildlife population..
