THE previous government in Punjab had paid more attention to the development of Lahore and its surrounding districts than the rest of the province. The sitting government is focussing on southern Punjab because the chief minister hails from there. All this development — past and present — however has been, and is being, done at the expense of central Punjab. The districts that comprise central Punjab hardly see any developmental work in progress.

Chiniot is an important district of this region, but is in a deplorable state because of its decaying infrastructure.

It was made a district in 2009, but since then its education and health facilities have deteriorated owing to lack of maintenance. There is no university in this district which has a population of over 1.4 million.

The Punjab chief minister should ensure that the grievances of the people of Chiniot are addressed.
