KARACHI, Oct 6: The facility of free digital library is not available in any varsity of the world, while the HEC has spent huge amount of money to facilitate research fellows and faculty members to get access to thousands of scientific research journals.

This was stated by the vice-chancellor of the University of Karachi, Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui.

He was speaking at the inauguration of a one-day training workshop on “Digital Library” at the University of Karachi on Thursday.

“In the present age of science and technology, it is surprisingly possible for every one to acquire modern education, if he is well-versed in computers”, he remarked.

The meanings and importance of a digital library is now understandable to every one, the vice-chancellor observed.

Dr Pirzada said that the work on computer networking in the varsity had been completed and now teachers could utilize this facility.

He said that to meet the future challenges it was imperative for every one to acquire computer knowledge.

The vice-chancellor said that realizing the importance of the subject, the HEC would include the subject of computer in the syllabus.

The coordinator of the workshop from HEC, Urooj Fatima, speaking on the occasion said that the HEC was holding such workshops in all the public sector varsities to have first hand knowledge for the teachers as well as students about the use of latest computer technology and the development taking place in this regard.

She said that it was the beginning for the learners, while in the next workshop advance training facility would be available in small groups and supported by group leaders.

In this way, she said that every teacher, student and library staff of the varsity would be well-versed with the latest technology and on the other hand could also impart training to others.

Earlier, the director of the workshop, Sarwar Nasim, in his welcome address highlighted the objective of the workshop and importance of learning computer technology and digital library.

The pro-vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Akhlaq Ahmed, also spoke on the occasion.—APP
