HYDERABAD: A young Covid-19 infected mother gave birth to a healthy baby girl at Liaquat University Hospital’s city branch on Saturday morning, the first such operation since the outbreak of the pandemic last year in February.

The mother was shifted to Covid-19 isolation unit and the baby was transferred to a private hospital for care.

“The mother was quite scared after learning she had tested positive for Covid-19,” said Prof Sajida Yousufani, the gynaecologist in whose ward the baby was born after caesarean section.

“We didn’t want to operate upon the mother as we were hopeful of a normal delivery but her family was extremely tense and so was the expecting mother,” said Dr Yousufani.

The hospital administration started disinfecting the operation theatre in gynaecology unit-I after the mother had been shifted to Covid-19 intensive care unit.

The patient was first being treated at a private hospital of the city but the hospital administration did not admit her in view of her positive PCR test. So, the patient had to be shifted to LUH where gynaecology consultants Dr Tooba and Dr Sobh performed surgery upon her under supervision of Dr Samina.
