BERLIN, Oct 5: An international arrest warrant has been issued in India for a German executive embroiled in a bribery scandal involving car making giant Volkswagen, German authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

Helmuth Schuster, a former executive of VW’s Czech arm Skoda, is currently believed to be in Germany.

“We are in contact with the Indian authorities. They have told us about it but we have not yet received the arrest warrant,” a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office in the northern city of Brunswick said.

Mr Schuster quit his job in June amid allegations he took bribes worth two million euros (2.4 million dollars) from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Indian authorities had paid the money in the belief they were securing a pledge that a company led by Mr Schuster would be based in Andhra Pradesh. But Volkswagen admitted he had been found to be fronting a camouflage company.—AFP
