ISLAMABAD: Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to open a drive-in cinema in the city so citizens can benefit from a safe outdoor activity amid the pandemic.

The outdoor cinema is expected to be opened next month wherein people will be able to watch films whilst sitting in their cars.

According to sources in the authority, films will shown on weekends at first but if positive feedback is received from people, the cinema will be opened on alternate days as well.

A large screen will be setup either in Shakarparian Parade Ground or F-9 Park while people will be able to hear the audio through their vehicles’ radio sets.

“In a bid to provide entertainment facility amid Covid-19, we are going to start the project, which will be organised under strict standard operating procedures,” CDA Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed told Dawn, addingthe purpose of the project is to provide entertainment to people under compliance with SOPs.

Director General (Environment) Naveed Tareen has been tasked to complete arrangement for the project and the authority is hopeful that it will be a success.

It is relevant to note here that Karachi was known for its open air cinemas in the 1980s. However, now during these challenging times due to spread of Covid-19, when entertainment facilities, sports and recreational activities have stopped, chances are that this idea will be a success.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by CDA said arrangements are being made for parking of 1,000 cars for the showing of one film, adding, it will be great a opportunity for citizens to have fun while also staying safe.
