Women’s hockey final today

KARACHI, Sept 30: Defending champions Railways will clash Wapda in the final of 21st national hockey championship at Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium on Saturday at 2.30pm.

Both the finalist teams remained unbeaten throughout the championship and it will be the test of their skill, stamina and opportunism in the final. Railways which had been dominating the national women’s hockey scene for more than a decade, are favorites to retain their title.

But Wapda are quite capable of upsetting their dream. Railway emerged on the top in pool “A” scoring a record 32 goals in the league rounds and two in the semifinal will heavily depend on their spearhead Riffat Mehdi.

On the other hand last year’s Quetta National Games gold medalist Wapda will be banking on prolific scorer and captain Azra Nasir for winning maiden national title.

Interestingly Wapda which banged in 28 goals in two league games and recorded 2-0 win against Lahore Colors, not conceded a single goal during the competition.—APP
