Six drown as van plunges into canal

SIALKOT, Sept 27: Six people, including an infant girl, drowned when a Pasrur-bound van plunged into the BRB Canal near Bharokey, Daska, on Tuesday afternoon. A van carrying 28 passengers, including six on its roof, was on its way to Pasrur when it plunged into the canal due to overspeeding.

Some 11 people, including nine women, had been rescued and six bodies recovered till the filing of this report in the evening.

The divers were busy searching the remaining passengers. Those rescued were taken to the Daska THQ Civil Hospital.

The deceased except minor Hifza had yet to be identified.

Daska city police have registered a case against the van driver who is also stated to be missing.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has expressed concern over the death of six people in the accident, and ordered an inquiry under the supervision of Sialkot DCO Shafqat Ranjha.
