SAHIWAL, Sept 26: A Mepco audit team has unearthed an embezzlement of Rs70 million in its Sahiwal construction division. The FIA registered a case against four employees, including an XEN and two line superintendents.
Reports said that Mepco’s construction division officers had launched an electrification programme in 15 villages of the Arifwala sub-division. Line superintendents Shahid Ali and Muhammad Farooq, XEN Muhammad Yaseen and an SDO got indented the required material from the Mepco store.
According to the Mepco team, audited the record from July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004, the four officials had embezzled the store material.
The report said that line superintendent Shahid Ali had misappropriated Rs30.44 million, line superintendent Muhammad Farooq Rs10.30 million while XEN Muhammad Yaseen and his SDO had both embezzled Rs30.75 million.
Meanwhile, the XEN and his SDO alleged that late line superintendent Irshad Ahmed was involved in the embezzlement.
While Mepco’s deputy manager Chaudhry Abdul Ghani has withheld the dues of the deceased line superintendent, whose family is said to be on the verge of starvation.
No arrest has so far been made.

This was stated by Tehrik-i-Istiqlal president Rehmat Ali Wardag while talking to reporters at the residence of Rana Ghulam Sarwar here on Monday. Senior vice-president Shad Muhammad Khan was also present on the occasion.
Mr Wardag said the country would face a severe electricity crisis if the work on Kalabagh dam was not taken in hand by the end of the current year.
He said efforts of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto had also failed when she tried to initiate the work on Kalabagh dam by changing its name to Indus dam. She had also allocated the funds for this purpose.
