ISLAMABAD, Jan 19: Minister for Religious Affairs, Ushr and Zakat , Dr Mehmood Ahmad Ghazi said on Saturday the government would soon form an Ulema commission for an end to factional and sectarian confrontation in the country.

President Gen Pervez Musharraf and the cabinet had approved the proposal, he said addressing the fourth session of ‘Ulema and Mashaikh Conference’ held here under the auspices of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Zakat and Ushr.

He said, in this regard a law was being formulated in the Ministry of Law .

As many 20 Ulema and Mashaikh from all over the country would be made member of the commission, he added.

The minister said Ulema committees at provincial, district and tehsil level would be set up to settle differences among Ulema belonging to various school of thoughts.

Dr Ghazi also said the commission at federal, provincial and local level would recommend actions against those responsible for spreading sectarian hatred.

The religious matters which could not be controlled by the law enforcement agencies, would be resolved by the Ulema commission and committees, he added.

The minister assured that the proposals and recommendations given in the conference would be served as input for the future policies.

He also called upon the Ulema and Mashaikh to play their due role for the betterment of the country and society.

Former federal minister Hanif Tayyab and Allama Kaukab Noorani also addressed the fourth session of the conference.

Sindh and the NWFP ministers for religious affairs Wali Razi and Qari Rooh Ullah also attended the session.—APP
