SAO PAULO, Sept 24: Spain’s world championship leader Fernando Alonso, in a Renault, took pole position for Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix on Saturday. Earlier, McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen led final practice that could crown Alonso as Formula One’s youngest champion.

Spaniard Alonso, who needs just six points to take the title at the age of 24, went quickest in the day’s opening session but was pipped in the second by the one man who could keep him waiting for the championship on Sunday.

Raikkonen, 25 points behind Alonso in the standings and with two races remaining after Brazil, lapped in one minute 11.929 seconds with Alonso 0.181 slower.

Britain Jenson Button, for BAR, was third with Renault’s Italian Giancarlo Fisichella fourth.

Colombian Montoya, who won at Interlagos last year, skidded off at the end of the first session and was fifth in the second.

McLaren, six points behind Renault in the constructors’ standings, were fastest in both of Friday’s sessions. The Mercedes-powered team have won the last four races.—Reuters
