KARACHI: Polio evaluation from Jan 26

Published January 20, 2002

KARACHI, Jan 19: The three-day sub-national immunization drive against polio, commencing in different parts of the country including the selected regions of Sindh from Jan 22, will be followed by a third-party evaluation from Jan 26.

The director, Expanded Programme for Immunization, Sindh, Dr Shamsunisa, told APP here on Saturday that the evaluation exercise to be undertaken by Unicef would include Karachi, Hyderabad and Jacobabad districts, besides parts of Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sanghar, Shikarpur, Larkana and Ghotki.

Karachi, Hyderabad and Jacobabad were the districts reporting a few cases of polio during the last few months.

“There is a dire need to cut off the transmission routes of the virus and attain the targeted goal of polio eradication without any unnecessary delay,” she said.

Similarly, parts of Dadu, Shikarpur and other areas, though have reported no polio incidence, but being border zones, porous to the infiltration of the virus, will be provided immunization cover as a preventive measure.—APP
